Dealing With Distractions

I’m sure I am not the only one who sits down to write and gets distracted. More often than not, I’ll find myself browsing Reddit or YouTube, or playing games, or some other fun but ultimately unhelpful activity.

I try to schedule time for writing and it might be the single best thing I can do to get the ink flowing. By setting aside 20-30 minutes of my day where it’s just me, the blank page and the pen in my hand, I’ve eliminated a majority of the distractions. Doing it before I turn the computer on or before picking up my phone makes it even easier to get started.

I also don’t worry about the word count. It isn’t the number of words that is important, but that there are words flowing. So I don’t stop to check how many there are. I just keep going until I feel comfortable that I’ve done my writing workout. And that’s what it is – a workout. It’s mental exercise that needs to be done so that I can improve.

Pen and paper are my friends here. Sitting down at the blank page with the computer on in the background is not really conducive to writing.
