I got some sad news the other day: Metallica have cancelled their tour of Australia and New Zealand.
I’ve enjoyed their music since high school, but I’ve never seen them live. The Sydney show date fell close to my birthday so I thought I would treat myself. I bought tickets the instant they went on sale.
Since then, my excitement and anticipation had been building. My assessments for the semester are due the day before the show, so I would have been able to get them in and enjoyed the show without stress.
But alas, it is not to be.
Addiction is a terrible thing to battle. Booze, drugs, gambling, porn: pick your poison. There are plenty of moments where these things creep up on us. Anyone could fall off the horse. Those lapses of judgement can break even the strongest willed.
The response from the millions of fans world wide is fantastically positive. Heroes stumble, but we cheer them on anyway. I’m glad that James is getting the help he needs and everyone understands that he is human like the rest of us.
I’m disappointed that I won’t get to see Metallica this time, but it isn’t the end of the world. On the bright side, they’re refunding the tickets so I’ll not be out of pocket. I hope one day soon they’ll be back in Australia, fighting fit and ready to rock out.
Get well James.
