Lock Down Limbo

The last few months have been tough for everyone, especially since we have been stuck at home with no end in sight for the pandemic. Lock downs are draining and the longer they go on the more they seem to suck.

I understand the goal of extended lock downs is to protect us. No one actually wants to catch the virus or pass it on to a loved one. At the same time, no one wants to be stuck inside with naught but the walls for company. Frustration is only natural as a result.

The task then is to keep busy. Those of us lucky enough to be working from home remain connected to our work places and colleagues. While it is not the same as being in the office, it does allow us to talk to people and maintain a bit of normalcy during the crisis.

Lots of people have taken the time to revisit their hobbies. I have spent a decent chuck of my time during lock downs on reading more, writing regularly, and teaching myself new things about web development. I even catalogued my Commander decks because I wanted a record of what is actually in them and it felt nice to be handling the cards again. Keeping busy takes the focus off of being confined.

It is important to stay focused on the positives. I am incredibly fortunate to have maintained employment during the pandemic. I can joke and say that I’m enjoying my ‘government mandated holidays’ because I am working less hours and finishing at more civilised times. But most importantly, I still have my health.

Now lock downs are rumoured to be coming to an end in October and I’m filled with both concern and joy. Joy because I’ll finally get to catch up with friends and family I haven’t seen in months. Concern because of how restrictions will be eased. Will I have to enforce rules I may not agree with as part of my job going forward?

Regardless, I hope I have found different employment by then. I have been actively looking for a while now at web development roles. I miss the creative and technical challenges that come with the territory.
